OC President Jacques Rogge opens the envelope announcing that Rio de Janiero has won the bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games on October 2, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
When choosing locations for the Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) specifically gives the honor of hosting the Games to a city rather than a country. One of the important decision taken by IOC is the election of the host city for the Olympic Games. The election of hosting city takes seven years before the Games start.But the actual candidature process is launched to 10 years before and last for a period of approximately three years.
Reasons for a city or country to host the Olympic Games
